Meet emerging young artist, Esther, whom I have been tutoring drawing and painting since February, 2020. Esther certainly has learned so much in a short time as we usually meet once to twice a month during the Covid pandemic. I have taught her skills that are beyond the foundational practices that would normally take a year or so to achieve towards an intermediate level status. The importance of learning about the basic foundations for drawing, painting, and just about anything involving the creative process - the Elements of Art! Here are some photos of early learners, from pre-K through first graders, and emerging learners from 2nd to 5th graders, creating abstract art - one of the simplest ways for learning the basic elements of art.

Some of the photos below are artworks created by elementary students I taught to in Grades Kindergarten to 5, when I was a college work study/intern as an Art Docent (Teaching Artist) for the Olympia School District's Elementary School Visual Arts Pilot Program during the 2016-17 School Year. Deep Space Sparkle (www.deepspacesparkle.com) was the curriculum used as pre-approved by the school district.
Below are student artworks (Grades 4-6) displayed at the Hands On Children Museum during the Olympia Spring Arts Walk in April, 2018. I was proud of their achievement! The art displayed are lessons from learning about the histories of ancient viking longships by using watercolor, the American Great Plains and creating traditional Native American tunics. Sometimes....it's not about how you start, but how you finish! A Georgia O'Keeffe inspired art lesson, created by 4th-6th grade students, and myself. Oils on canvas (24 inches by 24 inches)
I've also had the opportunity to teach a couple of art workshops in December, 2017 at the City of Tukwila Parks and Recreation Department where I taught the fundamentals of fluid art to young students attending a Winter Break Youth Program. It was wonderful to see the joy on their faces when they learned how to "play" with paint as well as learning some of the basic elements of art by creating their own fluid art snowflakes.
